Tracking in unprepared environments for augmented reality systems

چکیده
Many Augmented Reality applications require accurate tracking. Existing tracking techniques require prepared environments to ensure accurate results. This paper motivates the need to pursue Augmented Reality tracking techniques that work in unprepared environments, where users are not allowed to modify the real environment, such as in outdoor applications. Accurate tracking in such situations is difficult, requiring hybrid approaches. This paper summarizes two 3DOF results: a real-time system with a compass – inertial hybrid, and a non-real-time system fusing optical and inertial inputs. We then describe the preliminary results of 5and 6-DOF tracking methods run in simulation. Future work and limitations are

Markerless Augmented Reality for Robots in Unprepared Environments
Augmented Reality (AR) can assist humans in understanding complex robot information, and improve Human and Robot Interaction (HRI). However, many restrictions are imposed by the underlying technology used and thus have limited current AR systems to operate in controlled or modified robot environments. This hinders the wide spread use of AR for different robot applications. This paper presents a...
متن کاملExtending Augmented Reality with Natural Feature Tracking
In traditional vision-based Augmented Reality tracking systems, artificially-designed fiducials (or landmarks) have been used as camera tracking primitives. The 3D positions of these fiducials should be pre-calibrated, which imposes limitations in ranges of tracking view. Fortunately, the advance of computer vision technologies combined with new point position estimation technology enable natur...
متن کاملSketching up the world: In-situ authoring for mobile Augmented Reality
We present a novel system allowing in-situ content creation for mobile Augmented Reality in unprepared environments. This system targets smartphones and therefore allows a spontaneous authoring while in place. We describe two different scenarios, which are depending on the size of the working volume and consequently use different tracking techniques. A natural feature-based approach for planar ...
متن کاملTracking on-line learned Natural Features for Mobile Augmented Reality
Augmented Reality (AR) systems present a mixture of the real world and virtual, computer generated objects to the user. One of the most challenging tasks when building an AR system is camera tracking. This process of determining the exact current location and orientation of the camera with respect to the scene is essential to be able to render objects registered with the real world. In this the...
متن کاملImproving Human-Machine Interfaces for Construction Equipment Operations with Mixed and Augmented Reality
Construction equipment operation and management is a process that operates the machine in different working conditions, monitors the operation condition of equipment, maintains and repairs equipment components by referring to technical specifications, and generates more information for future access (Wang & Dunston 2006a). These construction operations are being carried out on different platfor...
